The submission deadline for this semesters Student film and video
festival is almost here! You can pick up admission forms in the MIT B70
film office, or print out the one attached to this email...

The Student Film and Video Festival at the Union Theater is an important
tradition here at UWM, and along with the Senior Screening makes for an
exciting weekend at the end of each semester.

This year's festival will be programed by a panel of five judges:

Please submit your work on mini-DV or plug 'n play DVD in the Film
office (Mitchell B70) by 5pm on December 5th (This Friday!)

You can submit as many works as you like, as long as they have were
completed after the start of the Fall 07 Semester, i.e. projects
produced during past semesters (since August 2007)are also eligible, as
long as they have not been screened as part of a prior Student F&V
Festival....

Submissions for the 2009 Edinburgh International Film Festival is now
open. EIFF invites experimental short and feature projects for
consideration in our Black Box Section. Submissions to Black Box are
free.

You can submit online through the EIFF website or download a form and

The 63rd EIFF will take place from 17 28 June in Edinburgh. The
Festival aims to stand internationally as a festival of discovery, a
celebration of cinema, a centre of debate and a catalyst for new
films.

* Judging will take place on Dec 7th.

* Students can submit as many works as they like, but only one film and
one video from each student can screen in the festival itself.

* Students can submit any works completed after the start of the Fall 07

before. This means if a student submitted a work last year that did not
get in, he/she is allowed to submit it again, with or without changes.

* The festival will take place on Friday, December 12th in the Union

Just a reminder to all first-year Film students that Art-a-thon is
Friday, October 10 from 11:00 am – 2:30 pm. Registration is at 10:45,
MIT 323.

Please sign up for the various workshops. Choose two workshops, one from
11-12:15 and the other from 12:30-1:45. (If you have a class and can
only make one, please come anyway.) The sign up sheets are posted
outside Undergraduate Advisor Allison Cooke's office, MIT 323. Your
studio instructors will bring your class over to sign up.

Bring your drawing boards with clips, paper, and drawing supplies.
(Almost all of you are in drawing this semester, but if you are not and
do not have these supplies, we will provide them.) Some workshop require
that you bring some images or research with you, so please read the
workshop description carefully. We will furnish all the other materials
needed. We have several different workshops, everything from life
drawing to image transfer to iron on t-shirt transfers to printmaking to
cardboard habitats and more. The first workshop is from 11:00 - 12:15
and the second is from 12:30 –1:45. The workshops are followed by a huge
exhibition and pizza party (with a drawing for prizes galore!). There
will also be an Art Fair during the pizza party with information about
Graphic Design, Art Education, the Laptop Initiative, PSOA Advisors,
Artist and Display and Utrecht Art Supply Stores, and more.

Also, bring music cds/ ipods if you want. We like music in all areas and
will have some cd players.

Plan to arrive at 10:45 to register in MIT 323.

This event is just for all of you. It will be a fun day to meet other
art students and instructors and to make art that is different from the
classroom assignments. Best of all: it is FREE!

Check out our posters around MIT and ART. They were created by Kathryn
Kemmis and Marie Finke, both former Pre Art Student now in Graphic Design.

Associate Producer / Researcher Job on WHAT WE GOT: DJ SPOOKY'S QUEST FOR THE COMMONS

Please pass this along. 371 Productions is hiring an associate producer/researcher for my new film, What We Got: DJ Spooky's Quest for the Commons. The film is a documentary/fiction hybrid that features DJ Spooky on an invented journey to discover "the commons"; or all the stuff that belongs to all of us but it threatened by overzealous privatization, from the sky, to water, to public space to the internet and art&culture. The film will follow Spooky's journey in many forms: documentary, live-action scripted scenes, Zelig-like appearances with historic footage, and animation. Our goal is to not only create awareness of the notion of the commons, but to provide audiences with the experience of the commons. To this end, we'll share our media as we make it and offer audiences the opportunity to remix and repurpose our media while we work on our version of the film. The centerpiece of our outreach strategy is a set of 125 screenings of 125 different versions of the film hosted in commons(es) by groups aligned with our concerns for the enclose of commons. This will kick off a theatrical run and broadcast on PBS.

The job is based in Milwaukee, though the personnel are based in Milwaukee, San Francisco and New York. The job is roughly 6 months during a writing and pre-production phase, with the possibility of extension into production.

Environmental Short Film Festival

In conjunction with the Share the Earth Environmental Film Series and Earth Week 2008, the Union Theatre invites UWM film students to submit shorts (under 40 minutes) related to the environment. Films may be narrative, documentary, experimental, or animation. Awards ($150, $100, $75) will be given for Best Student Environmental Short, Second Place and Third Place, will be juried, and based on a combination of or strength in the following areas: outstanding topics, entertainment value, technical merit, inspirational or spiritual impact, superior filmmaking and/or artistic expression. Films will be screened in the Union Theatre at an environmental shorts program on Thursday, April 24 at 7pm, during Earth Week 2008. Winners will be announced at that event.

Entries can be dropped off at the 3rd floor, UWM Union, Room 321 or call 229-3111 for more information.

They met in Houston, Texas for a collaborative all-day, all-ages, all-free, all-good five-band gig called Unusual Animals. But that short rendezvous was not enough for either Microcinema or Asthmatic Kitty, so after a few carefully written telegrams and telephone calls, the two are getting together again to collectively present Independent Exposure 2008.

Since its inception in 1996, Independent Exposure has been a curatorial effort designed to bring the newest and most innovative short films to an untapped, broader audience by using non-traditional venues. These showcases are exhibited in non-traditional venues or "microcinemas" such as galleries, cafes, bars, nightclubs, outdoors, and other alternative spaces that support the independent arts. To date, Independent Exposure has been presented hundreds of times in 44 countries plus Palestine and Antarctica and at base camp on Mt. Everest.

Beyond regular San Francisco and Houston events, screenings in 2007 included a film festival in Ithaca, NY, a full screening of every 2007 IE edition in Alaska, a widely covered Halloween screening in San Francisco, a showing of films at Virgin Mobile Fest and a screening of Independent Exposure at one of Asthmatic Kitty Record's curated Unusual Animals show in Houston.

Since 2005, Independent Exposure has teamed up with a partner to curate the screening programs and select prize winners and a "best-of" selection. Recent partners include Addictive TV and Hal Hartley.

Asthmatic Kitty is currently one of the most influential independent record labels in the United States, and is an ideal co-curator for Independent Exposure 2008. "From the beginning 'musical' film and video have played a central role in our program," says founder Patrick Kwiatkowski. "So a curator with an eye for music is going to yield an interesting program. Asthmatic Kitty is less a label than a curator of music, bands, and musicians with a focused, yet evolving mission. They are a perfect partner and I can't wait to see how they apply themselves to the film arts."

Asthmatic Kitty also brings a festival component to the 2008 series. The label hosts "Unusual Animals" in various cities around the country. It is a curated showcase of regional musical talent and in 2008 a film component will be added.

Born in 1999, Asthmatic Kitty Records was originally conceived as a platform for musical projects by a community of artists from Holland, Michigan, a small city on the shoreLake Michigan. Some were Holland natives, and others had come to attend local colleges and universities. While the original Holland nucleus has now dispersed to various parts of the country, the fellowship is still growing, with new friends and shared projects with other independent labels. Asthmatic Kitty is now based in Lander, Wyoming, Indianapolis, Indiana and New York City.

Campus Ambassador Program

Dear Faculty and Staff,

We're still looking for students!!!

The Campus Ambassador (CA) Program here at UWM has been instrumental in helping our incoming freshmen class through New Freshmen Orientation every summer. These student leaders help to inform the incoming freshmen class of important campus resources available to them, distribute literature and information about drug and alcohol awareness, register for classes, and settle their fears about leaving for college. This year will be no different. Once again Campus Ambassadors will play an important role in helping these true freshmen students get acclimated to college life.

We need your help finding new Campus Ambassadors to help fill these positions! Please help us in recruiting students for these positions.

Just as we have in the past, we will once again be adjusting the program slightly to help provide better service to these new college students. The biggest change to the Campus Ambassador program this year will now be hiring for not just one, but for three positions. Our CAs will continue to work with New Freshmen Orientation, but will also play a heavy hand in UWM's new First Year Center and Freshmen Mentoring. Campus Ambassadors can apply for and fill any combination of these three positions. The three positions that our 2008-2009 Campus Ambassadors will be filling are…

- New Freshman Orientation Leader - (summer part-time work)
New Freshmen Orientation Leaders engage and welcome new freshmen students and their parents at the New Freshman Orientation programs during the summer months. As a New Freshman Orientation Leader students may be giving tours, administering materials, and/or helping students register for classes among many other duties during any one of our New Freshman Orientation Programs.

- Freshman Mentor – (summer/academic year part-time work)
After students have been to New Freshman Orientation, a Freshman Mentors will be charged with helping new freshmen acclimate to campus. Freshman Mentors will be focusing on connecting with these students via phone, email, p2p networks and face-to-face throughout the academic year and helping them adjust to campus life.

- First Year Center Staff – (summer/academic year part-time work)
The First Year Center (FYC) Staff will be planning and implementing academic and social programming to successfully engage new freshmen in their classes and ithe campus community. FYC Staff will be working on a daily basis within the FYC and with Freshman Mentors to create programs and facilitate mentoring.

We have had amazing student groups in the past two years and we hope that with your help, we can have an even better group of students for the coming year. If you know of a student that you feel would make a great Campus Ambasador, please encourage them to apply for one of our positions.

Internships Available, Milwaukee Intl Film Festival

The 2007 Milwaukee International Film Festival has internships opportunities available designed to give film students the chance to learn first hand the programming process of a rapidly growing international film festival.

Intern will work directly with the Staff in preparation for the 6th annual Milwaukee International Film Festival, September 18 - 28, 2008. This is an unpaid internship, available for school credit, of 8 – 15 hours a week. Openings are available immediately.
