FILM 116 Survey
FILM 116 Survey
1. What is your name (first, last)? Hello, my name is Isaiah Wells

2. Do you have a preferred name or nickname you would like us to use? I do not prefer any nicknames.

3. Do you own your own computer? If so, what platform (Mac, PC), and what operating system (Windows XP/Vista, Mac Tiger/Leopard, Linux, unsure)? If not, have you had experience with Mac or PC or both? I am currently trying to purchase a Mac book pro with Leopard operating system. I might need access to B-18 if I can’t fund a new computer. Regardless, I have had experience with Window XP and Leopard on both a Mac and PC.

4. Do you own a digital camera and/or video camera? If so, describe your gear, and talk a little bit about your experience capturing still and moving images. I don’t own a video camera, but I do own a digital camera. I own a basic point and shoot Cannon. It is not a fancy camera but it can accomplish some basic tasks. I find the experience with my digital, auto focus, Cannon to be rewarding. I focus a bit more on gathering a quick images paying little time concerning myself with lighting or focus. It’s interesting because when studying the pictures I later find new techniques (lighting arrangements, framing, textures, and such) that I might not have discovered otherwise. I feel that the somewhat random approach of capturing images offers me pictures that portray something I didn’t see before.

5. Have you ever edited a video before? If so, what software did you use? I have edited before, and I would like to become an editor. I edited a short for professor using Vegas 6.0. I have also used final cut pro a little bit.

6. Have you worked with sound (or music) before, either performing, recording, or processing? If so, please describe. I have worked a little bit with it. I am really hoping to put into practice sound recording this semester.

7. Who are your favorite filmmakers? John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, Robert Downey Jr. I don’t know. It is a really good question, and it has inspired me to make a list. My list will consist of categories and defined criteria’s yet to be determined. However I will create a director hall of fame.

8. What are some of your favorite films? I like almost all Alfred Hitchcock films. Jin Roh, The Kid,

9. Who or what inspired you to pursue studies in Film? I was inspired to pursue the mass media originally, communications or something. I wasn’t sure. I was taking Intro to Mass Communications at UW-Fox Valley under Professor Donald Meckiffe. It was during this class that I decided how I would spend my life. I really wanted to affect society, effect people, and become involved in struggling over value issues in the world today. I decided that film was the vehicle that could best get me there.

10. What kind of career do you imagine for yourself in Film or other Media Arts? I am working towards becoming an editor or director. I would like to do both.

11. Is there anything else you would like us to know about you? I hope to learn a great deal this semester. I am open to new approaches. I am looking forward to opening new dimension to my work as a filmmaker.

No.

3. Do you own your own computer? If so, what platform (Mac, PC), and what operating system (Windows XP/Vista, Mac Tiger/Leopard, Linux, unsure)? If not, have you had experience with Mac or PC or both?

I have a laptop (Toshiba) with Win Vista system.

4. Do you own a digital camera and/or video camera? If so, describe your gear, and talk a little bit about your experience capturing still and moving images.

I have a digital camera and a video camera. The DC is 3.2 megapixel Canon PowerShot A75. I bought it four years ago. Although it is not a professional camera, I think it is enough for me to explore the interested views, mostly the buildings, the insects, plants and landscapes. The camera is easy to use but its size is a little too big to carry. The color is fine but the image quality is limited.
I use my Panasonic miniDV recorder to shoot natural views. Its ability of revealing the original color and brightness of subjects is great. But it needs too much time to expose if in a dark environment. I don’t have too much experience with DV compared to DC.

5. Have you ever edited a video before? If so, what software did you use?

Yes. Ulead VideoStudio.

6. Have you worked with sound (or music) before, either performing, recording, or processing? If so, please describe.

Yes. I use Cool Edit to remix the songs and other sounds that I recorded. Basically, I add the chorus and sound to the background music and mix them. But all of them are just for my own entertainment.

7. Who are your favorite filmmakers?

Jacques Perrin
Steven Spielberg

8. What are some of your favorite films?

Le Peuple migrateur
Microcosmos
From Pole to Pole

9. Who or what inspired you to pursue studies in Film?

Not quite sure. But I guess it is just my study and life experience makes me to decide to study film.

10. What kind of career do you imagine for yourself in Film or other Media Arts?

a director making natural documentaries or scientific films.

11. Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?

I am a music fan and also very interested in science. I studied science in the last eight years and got a bachelor and master degree in biology. I hope I can know about the world in a different way by learning film which is an art embracing with modern technology.

I have a video camera its a Canon ZR500 with a external microphone port. I also have a 5 mega pixel Canon Power Shot SD450. Yes during several of my film classes. I have used mainly iMovie but have had some experience using both Final Cut and Adobe Premier.

6. Have you worked with sound (or music) before, either performing, recording, or processing? If so, please describe.
I have done a few things with sound nothing too detailed though. I have worked with matching music to footage by doing a music video and also basic problems when the audio doesn’t match up. I have done a few recordings for a few music classes but nothing major.

7. Who are your favorite filmmakers?
This is a very hard question that I get asked often and never seem to have a direct answer but Alfred Hitchcock, Frank Darabont, and Steven Spielberg are a few of my favorites.

8. What are some of your favorite films?
The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, Rear Window, Crash, Transformers, and X-Men are some of my favorites.

9. Who or what inspired you to pursue studies in Film?
Film was always something that interested me and once I got into high school I wanted to become a Veterinarian but that quickly went out the window once I took my first film class. Working on film projects are something I really enjoy time always flies by so quickly and I can work on them non-stop and not get bored. I found my self spending all my free time in our high school video lab and after talking to a few teachers I was convinced into going to school for film.

10. What kind of career do you imagine for yourself in Film or other Media Arts?
There are so many aspects of film that I have barely explored that interest me and I don’t have a specific area to focus on. I would love to become a music video director or help create promotional videos for different organizations to support causes.

11. Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?

I love drawing! I have a few connections with a few different bands that I do promotional work for and hoping to work with them during a music video shoot. I also did a anti-drug video campaign in high school that I’m very passionate about.

2. Do you have a preferred name or nickname you would like us to use?

Not Sure

3. Do you own your own computer? If so, what platform (Mac, PC), and what operating system (Windows XP/Vista, Mac Tiger/Leopard, Linux, unsure)? If not, have you had experience with Mac or PC or both?

I built my computer with an Asus motherboard with dual-screen capability, Intel Pentium D processor, 750watt power supply, an 80Gb hard drive, DVD/CD burner, 2Gb of RAM, and Windows XP Service Pack 2 (I most definitely will not be getting service pack 3 or Vista).

I replaced the graphics card with an ATI Radeon 1650pro a couple years ago but I'd like to get a new one (preferably the NVideo GeForce 1800 series or something better).

I'd also reeeally love a Tb hard drive (there's room in my chassi for 2). Also waiting for Solid State Drives to reach reasonable prices.

I also enjoy inputting random strings of hex in font tags to see which color I get...

2. Do you have a preferred name or nickname you would like us to use?

Mariella or Mari

3. Do you own your own computer? If so, what platform and what operating system?

I have a PC that runs XP

4. Do you own a digital camera and/or video camera? If so, describe your gear, and talk a little bit about your experience capturing still and moving images.

I own an Olympus 560 Ultra Zoom digital camera. It has 8 mega pixels and an 18x optical zoom. I use a 2gb Olympus memory card, which allows me to take panoramic shots, and rechargeable batteries. I have been taking pictures and manipulating them in Photoshop for over 4 years. I enjoy taking photos of nature, interesting or historical architecture, and urban environments. I went to Lollapalooza in 2006 and took plenty of pictures of the bands that I saw. It was a great experience, and I'd love to take more gig photos. I also love to photograph old movie theaters.

I own a Samsung mini DV camera, which I haven't used much.
I went to a film summer camp in Evanston, IL 3 summers ago and produced 2 short films with a group of 11-16 year olds. I performed camera duties for one(The Day of the Dork) and directed the other(a b&w adaptation of "The Picture of Dorian Gray"). I gained extensive experience using a Sony mini DV camera, and one day using a 16mm Bolex. Unfortunately, our camera had a light leak and our footage was ruined. The Day of the Dork can be viewed here. The watermelon helmets on the martians were my idea. I had a lot of fun, and was inspired to pursue film making.

5. Have you ever edited a video before? If so, what software did you use?

I edited the Dorian Gray short in iMovie, which I had never used before, and I had to complete it in one day. It was a nightmare. I have used Windows Movie Maker for a few things with much better results. I downloaded JahShaka once, and it was pretty lame, so I deleted it.

6. Have you worked with sound (or music) before, either performing, recording, or processing? If so, please describe.

I took piano lessons for 6 years and voice lessons for 2. I have been playing the bass and guitar for 5 years. I have a MicroKorg synthesizer that I like to goof around with. I began playing the accordion in June, and I love it. I have been in a few bands and played a bunch of shows. I've recorded music using my computer and Cakewalk, and have experience converting audio files.

7. Who are your favorite filmmakers?

David Lynch, Charles Chaplin, Wes Anderson, Woody Allen, David Cronenberg, Peter Jackson, Sam Raimi, Tim Burton

8. What are some of your favorite films?

Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Devil and Daniel Johnston, Bananas, Annie Hall, Amelie, Pi, American Movie, In The Soup, Ghost World, Ed Wood, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Evil Dead II, Brain Dead, Shivers, Fido, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, The Butcher Boy, City of God, The Shining, Capote, Waking Life, Me You And Everyone We Know, The Conversation, Midnight Cowboy, American Beauty, Groundhog Day, Where the Buffalo Roam, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Pink Flamingos, I Heart Huckabees, Better Off Dead, Pretty in Pink, Spun, Night of the Living Dead, Bad Taste, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and many more.

9. Who or what inspired you to pursue studies in Film?

The film Eraserhead by David Lynch opened up a whole new world for me. My parents showed it to me for Halloween when I was 13, and it blew my mind. It challenged everything I had known about movies.

10. What kind of career do you imagine for yourself in Film or other Media Arts?

Cinematographer, editor, director, I don't know... I am interested in learning more about using film. Although digital media is great, I think film is a wonderful medium and I want to use it more. I'd love to make a music video one day.

11. Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?

I make 1" and 2.25" pinback buttons for bands and businesses. I enjoy biking, hanging out with my boyfriend and cat, making jewelry, cooking(I'm vegetarian), collecting records, and shopping at thrift stores. I have a 16mm film projector w/sound in my parent's basement, but I've never had any film to try it out. I have a bonsai tree. I like Troma movies, and I took Lloyd Kaufman's film making master class.

8. What are some of your favorite films?

Big Fish, Little Miss Sunshine, and Anchorman are probably my top three that I can think of at the moment.

9. Who or what inspired you to pursue studies in Film?

It wasn't exactly who or what that inspired me; I've just always wanted to create a piece of art that provokes human emotion. The idea that if a complete stranger were to look at my piece of art and were to feel an emotion, even if it weren't the feeling i was trying to portray in the piece, has always inspired me to continue persuing a career in art. Movies can bring upon so many different emotions in people and I have always wanted to be a part of that type of art.

4. Do you own a digital camera and/or video camera? If so, describe your gear, and talk a little bit about your experience capturing still and moving images.

I have a Dell XPS (PC) that uses Windows XP. I have used MACs, but since I've been using PCs since I was 8 so I'm far more proficient with PCs.

4. Do you own a digital camera and/or video camera? If so, describe your gear, and talk a little bit about your experience capturing still and moving images.
I HAD a Polaroid digital camera that broke recently. I have a Panasonic handi-cam. I've been making movies since I was a sophomore in high school. My and my friends had a show that I edited and produced entirely. Since then I have done many film projects for my high school and became the go to guy when students (both older and younger) had questions or needed help with their video projects. I am an avidphotoshop user and used to have my own clothing line where I remixed internet pictures to make my designs.

5. Have you ever edited a video before? If so, what software did you use?
I have edited MANY videos. Most of them my own projects. I only use the simple version of windows movie maker but that has always been good enough for the time being. I also hand edited film when I took Film 220 a while back so I have a little experience with that.

9. Who or what inspired you to pursue studies in Film?
I started making them when I was about 16 and have always loved cameras and story telling and manipulating what the audience sees to have them see myimage. Making my own special effects has also always been a challenge I loved.

10. What kind of career do you imagine for yourself in Film or other Media Arts?
I want to be a writer/director/editor. I'm already working on a script.

11. Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?

Kimberly Grzesiak

2. Do you have a preferred name or nickname you would like us to use?
You can call me Kim if you'd like.

4. Do you own a digital camera and/or video camera? If so, describe your gear, and talk a little bit about your experience capturing still and moving images.
I own my own digital camera, it's a Canon power shot SD450, 5.0 mega pixels. I've been taking pictures for as long as I can remember and its always been something I've enjoyed to the fullest. Over the past couple of years I've become more serious about the pictures I take and I think I'm steadily improving.

I have never actually done any video editing myself but I'm very interested in learning about it.

9. Who or what inspired you to pursue studies in Film?
There are various reasons as to why I chose film as a career. The first reason is because a film can open up someone's eyes and bring light to something that an individual may have had no prior experience with. Films can educate people in an enjoyable way, bringing them together at the same time. Also, I love that you can be creative with films and I love that there is a great deal of teamwork involved in putting a film together. To me, having a career in film means constant learning, teamwork, creativity, fun, and new experiences. All of these reasons led me to my choice today.

10. What kind of career do you imagine for yourself in Film or other Media Arts?
I really don't know what I see myself doing in film. Right now I'm focused on learning about all the different aspects of film and film production and then from there I would choose an area I enjoy the most...perhaps with soundtracks or something like that.

4. Do you own a digital camera and/or video camera? If so, describe your gear, and talk a little bit about your experience capturing still and moving images.
I own an Olympus Evolt E-300 DSLR with a nice 14-54mm lens, a so-so 50-200mm telephoto, a lens baby 2.0, a fl-36 flash, and random other bits. I like to walk around and take pictures of the world for the most part. I just have fun. Most of my experience is with stills, I don't do too much motion photography. I also have made some still motion videos in photoshop Animation.

I have been very into photography for a long time. I saw that films had a director of photography and thought it was interesting. I am trying DIVAS to see how I can mesh my love of music and images together. Film goes along with that.

10. What kind of career do you imagine for yourself in Film or other Media Arts?
Honestly, I have no idea. I mentioned the director of photography thing, but I guess I'll just play the cards I'm dealt along the way.

Music is a kind of a big thing for me. I have a tendency to start tapping beats when bored. My main instrument is acoustic guitar, and my style is sort of latin- classical-esque.
